The United States carried out large-scale airstrikes against dozens of Islamic State targets across central Syria on Friday, responding to a deadly attack on US personnel last weekend. US officials said the operation aimed to weaken IS capabilities and deter future attacks. The strikes followed a pledge by President Donald Trump to retaliate after American troops were killed while supporting counter-terrorism missions in the region.

US Central Command confirmed that more than 70 IS-linked sites were hit, including weapons depots and fighter positions, with support from Jordanian jets. The action came after an attack in Palmyra killed two US National Guard members and a civilian interpreter. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said operations against IS would continue to protect American forces.
