India Summons Bangladesh Diplomat After Threats to High Commission and ‘Seven Sisters’ Comment

Bangladesh

India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah to New Delhi. The step was taken to convey serious concerns over the safety of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The summons followed a recent threat received by the Indian mission. Authorities did not disclose details about the nature or origin of the threat.

The situation became more sensitive after Riaz made a provocative statement a day earlier. The leader warned of isolating India’s north eastern states, commonly referred to as the ‘Seven Sisters.’

These remarks heightened security concerns. They came soon after India observed Vijay Diwas, marking the 54th anniversary of the 1971 Liberation War that led to the creation of Bangladesh.

During this period, Bangladesh also reiterated that its relationship with India remains mutually beneficial. Officials from both sides stressed the need for continued cooperation and regional stability. However, bilateral ties have faced strain due to the Hasina issue. It has sought the extradition of the former prime minister, who was recently sentenced to death over crimes against humanity linked to unrest that killed over 500 people.

Meanwhile, under interim chief Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has shown warmer engagement with Pakistan. Some Bangladeshi leaders have accused India of interference, allegations New Delhi has firmly denied.
