Why Is Delhi Celebrating Diwali Today

This year, Delhi’s Diwali celebrations are linked to the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage. The city is hosting delegates from around the world from December 8 to 13. India’s proposal to include Diwali on the UNESCO list is being discussed on December 9 and 10. The government aims to showcase the festival as an important part of Indian culture while demonstrating the richness of the country’s traditions.

The Red Fort is the main venue for this year’s Diwali events, featuring cultural performances, ceremonial lighting of diyas, and exhibitions. Chandni Chowk is decked out with vibrant rangolis and colourful lights. The Delhi Secretariat and other government buildings shine with golden and tricolour LED displays. Fireworks and festive markets complete the celebrations, creating a magical atmosphere for locals, tourists, and international guests attending the UNESCO event.
