The Lok Sabha on Friday introduced the Right to Disconnect Bill 2025, a private member’s bill presented by NCP MP Supriya Sule during the Winter Session. The bill seeks to give employees the legal right to ignore work-related calls, messages, and emails beyond office hours. It also proposes an Employees’ Welfare Authority to oversee its implementation. The aim is to reduce stress linked to constant digital communication and ensure a healthier work-life balance for workers across India.
Right to Disconnect Bill 2025
The Right to Disconnect Bill 2025 raises concerns over employees feeling pressured to stay connected after work. The bill cites studies showing that constant availability can cause stress, fatigue, and sleep issues. It highlights how continuous checking of emails and messages harms work-life balance. The proposal also suggests flexible guidelines so companies and employees can decide suitable terms that respect both productivity needs and personal time.

Supriya Sule also placed two other bills before the Lok Sabha: the Paternity and Paternal Benefits Bill 2025 and the Code on Social Security (Amendment) Bill 2025. The paternity benefits bill aims to provide paid leave for fathers to support early childcare. The social security amendment seeks to recognise gig and platform workers as a separate category, ensuring fair wages, regulated working hours, and better protection for India’s growing digital workforce.
