FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to his “close friend”, Donald Trump, during the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The US President received the honour about 30 minutes into the event. The moment came before the official draw for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Questions Rise Over Award Criteria
FIFA introduced the new peace prize last month, stating that it recognises individuals who have taken exceptional actions to unite people and promote peace. However, the award sparked controversy due to the absence of FIFA Council approval. Critics also pointed to the unclear criteria and Infantino’s close ties with Trump.
Many suggested the award served as a consolation after Trump was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize. The 2025 Peace Prize instead went to Venezuelan leader María Corina Machado.
FIFA released no nominee details and did not explain how the selection was made. Human Rights Watch sought information about the criteria and process, but its enquiry received no response.
