Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office is set to undergo a historic shift as the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) relocates from its 78-year-old base in South Block to the newly built Sewa Teerth complex. This move is part of the larger Central Vista Redevelopment Project, which has recently seen several Raj Bhavans renamed as Lok Bhavans.
PMO Shifts to Sewa Teerth
The PMO will now operate from Sewa Teerth-1, located next to Vayu Bhawan, while Sewa Teerth-2 and Sewa Teerth-3 will house the Cabinet Secretariat and the National Security Advisor’s Office. Activity has already begun. The Cabinet Secretary, T V Somanathan, held a high-level meeting with defence chiefs in Sewa Teerth-2 on October 14.
This transition aligns with the government’s plan to redesign the central administrative district along Kartavya Path. The aim is to create a more pedestrian-friendly and integrated zone. A key element of this transformation is the unified Common Central Secretariat, known as Kartavya Bhavan. It consists of 10 modern buildings that replace ageing facilities such as Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan.
Additionally, the historic South Block and North Block will be transformed into museums under the Yuga Yugin Bharat Sangrahalaya project, supported by France’s Museum Development Agency. The redevelopment also includes plans for automated people movers to enhance connectivity.
