A week before the release of Ranveer Singh’s highly anticipated film Dhurandhar, the family of late Major Mohit Sharma, Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. They are seeking an immediate stay on the film’s release and screenings. The petition alleges that the movie heavily draws inspiration from Major Sharma’s life without the consent of the family or the Indian Army.
Petition Raises Major Concerns
Represented by advocates Roopenshu Pratap Singh and Manish Sharma of Samaanta Law Firm, the family claims the trailer and promotions “unmistakably mirror” Major Sharma’s military operations in Kashmir. The plea emphasises that a martyr’s life cannot be commercialised without permission and protection of dignity. It also cites violations of posthumous personality rights and family privacy under Article 21.
The petition names filmmaker Aditya Dhar, Jio Studios, producer Jyoti Deshpande, and government bodies, including the ADGPI and the I&B Ministry. Dhar clarified that Dhurandhar is not based on Major Sharma. He promised that any future depiction of the martyr’s life would involve the family.
The film stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Akshay Khanna, and Arjun Rampal, and is scheduled for release on December 5, 2025.
