If you’ve opened Instagram or Twitter lately, you’ve probably seen those viral photos of people dressed in colourful clothes, their faces covered, and wearing crowns made of bright mountain flowers. These eye-catching pictures come from the Raulane Festival, a 5,000-year-old tradition from Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, that’s suddenly everywhere online. Celebrated in Kalpa and its surrounding villages, this ancient ritual has no written history and no clear origin. It has been passed down from one generation to the next, making it even more special.

How the Raulane Festival Is Celebrated
At the heart of Raulane are two symbolic figures: the ‘Raula‘ and the ‘Raulane’, both chosen from village communities. They dress in woollen clothes, jewellery, and beautiful flower crowns, with their faces fully covered. They walk through the village in a slow, calm procession with drums, chants, and temple bells playing around them. Masked protectors called Zannpundulu lead the way to keep away negative energies. The procession ends at the Nagin Narayan temple, where the traditional dance takes place.
Why the Raulane Festival Is Going Viral
People on social media are loving the look and feel of Raulane — the colourful clothes, the masks, the flower crowns, and the peaceful atmosphere of the Raulane Festival. The main highlight is the slow, graceful dance performed in the temple courtyard, which locals believe sends off the Sauni, or mountain fairies, after winter. As more people see these photos and videos online, many are amazed that Raulane has stayed the same for thousands of years. Its beauty, mystery, and deep cultural roots are making it a huge trend across platforms.
