Gautam Gambhir’s Blunt Message to Shubman Gill Amid Injury Row: ‘Skip IPL If You Want Rest’

Shubman Gill’s recent neck spasm during the Kolkata Test has reignited the debate surrounding his growing workload, particularly after he played continuously since the Asia Cup in September. The 25-year-old Gill, who is now India’s T20I vice-captain and ODI captain, featured in all four series over the past month while most other players were rotated.

The strain finally caught up with him, forcing him out of the must-win second Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, a match India needed to save the series. His injury has raised fresh concerns over managing the responsibilities of an all-format leader.

Gambhir’s Blunt Message

However, head coach Gautam Gambhir dismissed the idea of workload management. Speaking to Aakash Chopra on Media Day, Gambhir bluntly said that if Gill needs rest, he should “skip the IPL.” Chopra supported this view, adding that players should continue while in good form unless they face mental burnout.

Gill reportedly requires around ten days of rest, and India hopes he will return for the ODI series starting on November 30.
