Jasprit Bumrah becomes First Indian Fast Bowler Since 2008 to Claim 5 Wickets on Opening Day of Home Test

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah’s big milestone! He delivered a sensational performance on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, becoming the first Indian fast bowler since 2008 to claim five wickets on the opening day of a home Test. The 31-year-old pacer tore through South Africa’s batting line-up with figures of 5/27 in 14 overs, marking his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. The last fast bowler to achieve this feat on Day 1 of a red-ball Test in India was Dale Steyn, who took 5/23 in Ahmedabad in 2008.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Dominant Spell

Bumrah’s spell included crucial breakthroughs as he dismissed Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, and Tony de Zorzi before removing Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj in the 55th over. With this performance, Bumrah surpassed Mohammed Shami’s Test tally, reaching 231 wickets.

He now stands third in five-wicket hauls in India–South Africa Tests, behind Steyn and Ashwin, further solidifying his status as India’s premier fast bowler.
