Kartik Purnima 2025 will be celebrated on 5 November, as the moon shines in its full glory and devotees across India prepare to embrace one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. The festival marks not just the Purnima (full moon) of the Kartik month but also celebrates Dev Deepawali, when the ghats of Kashi (Varanasi) illuminate in divine radiance, welcoming the gods and goddesses who, as per belief, descend to Earth to celebrate Diwali themselves.
Sacred Rituals of Snan and Daan
Kartik Purnima 2025 holds immense spiritual importance. It is believed that those who perform snan (ritual bathing) and daan (charity) on this day attain divine blessings and are freed from past sins.
This year, the muhurat for snan and daan begins at 4:52 AM and continues till 5:44 AM. Devotees are encouraged to bathe in the holy Ganga before sunrise and donate to needy people. Offerings such as food grains, clothes, ghee, sesame seeds, and rice are considered most auspicious.
Puja and Worship Timings
- Morning Puja Timing: 7:58 AM to 9:20 AM
- Evening Pradosh Kaal Puja Timing: 5:15 PM to 7:05 PM
- Deities to Worship: Lord Vishnu (in the form of Lakshmi-Narayan) and Lord Shiva
- Significance: Performing these rituals is believed to invite prosperity, peace, and happiness into one’s home.
Shubh Muhurat for Deep Daan
One of the most important rituals of Kartik Purnima 2025 is Deep Daan, the offering of light. The auspicious timing for Deep Daan this year is from 5:15 PM to 5:50 PM. Devotees can light pure ghee or mustard oil diyas, as both are considered spiritually cleansing. According to tradition, lighting an odd number of diyas, such as 5, 7, 11, 21, 51, or 101, is believed to bring good fortune and divine blessings.
Significance of Fasting and Home Worship
Those observing a fast may choose between jalahar (water-only) or phalahar (fruit-only) fasting. The day begins with the worship of Lord Ganesha, followed by the Shodashopachar puja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Reciting the Satyanarayan Katha at home adds greater spiritual merit.
To conclude the day, devotees light lamps in key areas of their homes, such as five at the main entrance, one near the Tulsi plant, one in the northern part of the house, one in the temple, and one near the water tap. Each lamp holds spiritual significance, symbolising light, purity, and divine blessings. Sprinkling Ganga jal around the house purifies the surroundings and invites divine grace.
