Have you ever heard the saying that women can’t keep secrets? According to the Mahabharata, there’s actually a divine reason behind it. It is said to be a curse given by none other than Yudhisthira himself. The Mahabharata, one of the most dynamic Hindu epics, is filled with intertwined tales that all lead to the great Battle of Kurukshetra.
Among its many episodes, one stands out for its emotional depth — the moment when Yudhisthira cursed his own mother, Kunti, and all womankind. But what made the righteous and calm Yudhisthira reach such a point of anger?
Kunti’s Divine Boon
It all began long before the war when Sage Durvasa blessed young Kunti with a divine boon, granting her the power to summon any god and bear a child with their qualities. Unsure and curious, Kunti invoked the Sun God, Surya, and was blessed with a son, Karna. However, being unmarried and fearful of society, she abandoned her newborn baby, placing him in a basket and setting him adrift on the Ganga.
Rise of Karna
Karna was later found and raised by Adhiratha, the charioteer of Dhritarashtra, and his wife. As he grew up, he became a close ally of Duryodhana. This friendship unknowingly tied him to his true brothers, the Pandavas.
Revelation Before the War
As destiny unfolded, Kunti revealed the truth to Karna before the great war, telling him that he was her eldest son. But Karna, loyal to Duryodhana, promised that he would not harm any of the Pandavas except Arjuna. Tragically, his true identity remained a secret to his brothers until after his death.
Yudhisthira’s Heartbreak and Anger
When Yudhisthira finally learned the truth after the war, he was heartbroken. The realisation that they had unknowingly killed their own brother filled him with grief and rage. He believed that if Kunti had revealed the truth earlier, the devastating war could have been avoided.
Curse That Changed Womankind
In his anguish, Yudhisthira cursed Kunti and, through her, all women. He declared that no woman would ever be able to keep a secret again. According to legend, that is why women are often said to be unable to keep secrets.
