In a rare and candid conversation, Ismail Darbar, the father of actor Zaid and father-in-law of actress Gauahar Khan, opened up about his views on Gauahar and their family’s traditional values. His remarks have sparked many discussions about old-fashioned thinking and how women’s work life changes after marriage in India.
Praising Gauahar Khan as a Wife and Mother
Speaking fondly yet firmly, Ismail began by appreciating the beautiful bond shared between Gauahar Khan and Zaid. He said warmly, “Gauahar ke baare mein main itna hi jaanta hoon ki Zaid ke saath uska bohot achha relation hai.” Ismail praised her caring and loving nature, especially her role as a mother to their first child. He added, “Zaid ka jo pehla bachcha hua, Zehaan, uski parvarish usne jitne achche se kiya ki Zaid bolta hai ki ab samajh mein aata hai ki parvarish kya hota hai.” He showed respect for how Gauahar has managed her responsibilities at home and motherhood so gracefully.
Traditional Views on Her Career
However, when the conversation turned to Gauahar’s work life, Ismail’s tone became more traditional. He admitted honestly, “Main uss tarah ki family se hoon,” and explained that his upbringing was based on old values. He said, “Mera ek nature hai, meri family ki jo parvarish hai na woh thodi purani soch ki hai.” He added, “Main ye sochta hoon ki Gauahar ab humare ghar ki izzat hai, toh main ab ye toh nahi bol sakta ki tum kaam chhod do… woh mera right nahi hai, woh agar right hai toh Zaid ka hai.” Ismail’s words clearly show that while he respects Gauahar, he also believes in maintaining certain traditional boundaries.
Respect Mixed with Restriction
His statement — “Gauahar ab ghar ki izzat hai” — reflects the mindset of many old-style families, where a woman’s public image is closely linked to family honour. Ismail also mentioned that he does not watch her films or screen work. He explained, “Main unki cheezein dekhta nahi hoon jisse mujhe takleef ho. Agar dekhunga toh bardasht nahi hoga.” This shows his inner conflict between affection for his daughter-in-law and his deep-rooted belief in traditional values.
Happy Family Built on Love and Values
Gauahar Khan, known for her strong and independent nature, married Zaid Darbar in December 2020. The couple welcomed their first son, Zehaan, in May 2023. They became parents again to their second son, Farwaan, on 1 September 2025.
Ismail’s words reflect the difference between modern and traditional mindsets in Indian families. Love and respect often coexist with long-held expectations, leaving women like Gauahar trying to balance family honour with personal freedom.
