The Karur stampede, a horrifying tragedy, occurred in Tamil Nadu on 27 September 2025 during a political rally hosted by actor and politician Joseph Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The crowd crush claimed at least 41 lives, including 9 children, 18 women, and 13 men. Nearly 100 others were injured, with at least 83 suffering serious injuries such as fractures and asphyxiation. They were rushed to hospitals in Karur and nearby districts.
Massive Crowd Beyond Capacity
The incident took place in Velusamypuram, along the Karur–Erode highway, where the number of attendees far exceeded the permitted 10,000. Estimates suggest 25,000–27,000 people had arrived before Vijay’s speech, while local reports claimed nearly 60,000 gathered. Police and organisers were unable to manage the unexpectedly large crowd, creating extreme congestion and pressure points around the stage and nearby structures.
Delay Triggers Chaos
Vijay’s arrival was delayed by nearly seven hours, worsening the situation. Scheduled to speak in Namakkal earlier in the day, he reached Karur only at 7 p.m., with thousands of supporters following in vehicles along his route. Without proper barricades or crowd control, attendees surged forward to catch a glimpse of him, sparking the deadly wave of the crush.
How the Karur Stampede Unfolded
Eyewitnesses reported several waves of panic as the crowd surged uncontrollably. People were pushed and trampled in multiple areas, including near structures and equipment, while emergency responders struggled to reach those in need. Volunteers tried to create safe passages, but many children and elderly people were separated or trapped, adding to the chaos and fear.
Vijay’s Heartbreaking Statement
Vijay expressed deep sorrow on social media, stating that he was “writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He offered Rs 20 lakhs to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakhs to the injured. His statement reflected genuine grief over the preventable disaster that unfolded during what was meant to be a celebratory political rally.

Reactions Across Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin called the situation “worrying”, visiting hospitals and meeting families of the victims. He announced Rs 1 million (approximately US$12,000) compensation for the families of the deceased. Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed shock and urged impartial police action for all political events in the state.
Government and Police Response
The Tamil Nadu government acted swiftly, deploying emergency teams and medical personnel. Retired Madras High Court justice Aruna Jagadeesan was appointed to investigate the incident. Key TVK leaders, including Bussy Anand, C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, and V.P. Mathiazhagan, were booked on criminal charges for negligence, with Mathiazhagan arrested on 30 September.
National and International Condolences
Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, expressed condolences, with Modi announcing compensation for victims. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited affected families. Internationally, China’s ambassador Xu Feihong and the Foreign Ministry expressed deep sympathy and concern.
The Karur stampede remains a stark reminder of the dangers of overcrowded political events and inadequate planning. Families mourn loved ones lost in a preventable disaster, while survivors carry physical and emotional scars.
