Ladakh Violence: Sonam Wangchuk Arrested 48 Hours After Deadly Clashes

Activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by Leh Police under the National Security Act (NSA) after violent protests in Ladakh left four people dead and over 90 injured. Wangchuk had led demonstrations demanding full statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. His 15-day hunger strike, which began on 10 September 2025, ended on 24 September amid rising unrest. Authorities said provocative statements by leaders fuelled tensions during the protests.

The government said Wangchuk gave provocative speeches, including references to Arab Spring-style protests and Gen Z protests in Nepal, which stirred the crowd. The Ministry of Home Affairs stated: “A hunger strike was started by Sonam Wangchuk on 10 September, stating the demand of (bringing the UT under) the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and statehood for Ladakh.” It added that the government has been actively talking with the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance through formal and informal meetings. The arrest of Sonam Wangchuk by the Leh Police is part of ongoing efforts to control unrest and maintain law and order.
