What is Agni-Prime? India’s Next-Gen Ballistic Missile Successfully Tested from Rail Launcher

Agni-Prime

India has successfully launched its next-generation intermediate-range quasi-ballistic nuclear missile, Agni-Prime, from a rail-based mobile launcher. This milestone demonstrates India’s strategic mobility, allowing quick launches across the railway network with reduced visibility and reaction time.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the Strategic Forces Command (SFC). He said, “This successful test has put India in the group of select nations with the capability to develop a canisterised launch system from a moving rail network.” The achievement indicates the missile is now inducted into the SFC.

Rail-Based Launch

The missile was fired from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, giving the military the ability to operate across the country without preconditions. This makes Agni-Prime a true “missile on the go,” capable of being launched even while in transit.

Advanced Features and Capabilities

Agni-Prime, initially called Agni-1P, has a range of 2,000 kilometres and weighs 50% less than Agni-3. It features independent launch capabilities, state-of-the-art communication systems, and protective mechanisms, ensuring high accuracy and survivability.

Manoeuvrability and Precision

Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, Agni-Prime can manoeuvre during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, making it difficult to intercept. Its two-stage solid-fuelled design, advanced propulsion systems, composite motor casings, and ring-laser gyroscope-based navigation provide precise trajectory and location tracking.

Strategic Significance

With this launch, India can deploy nuclear missiles from sea, air, land, and rail platforms, enhancing its strategic deterrence. While Agni-Prime will not replace the Prithvi, Agni-1, and Agni-2 series, it complements India’s existing nuclear arsenal and strengthens the country’s modernised defence capabilities.

A Leap in Defence Technology

The rail-based launch of Agni-Prime positions India among an elite group of nations with mobile canisterised nuclear missiles. Its advanced technology, mobility, and accuracy represent a major step forward in securing India’s strategic interests.
