Ladakh violence erupted today, leaving four dead and around 70 injured. Following this, the central government has accused activist Sonam Wangchuk of inciting unrest. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, despite repeated calls to end his hunger strike peacefully, Wangchuk continued. He allegedly misled young protesters by referencing Arab Spring-style movements and Gen Z protests in Nepal. The government claims this led to the Ladakh violence. Additionally, political and administrative offices in Leh were attacked.
Ladakh Violence
Government sources say the unrest was deliberately orchestrated, adding that Ladakh’s youth were misled into taking part. The high-powered committee (HPC) had been addressing long-standing demands, including increasing tribal reservations and granting official recognition to the Bhoti and the Purgi language. However, politically motivated elements allegedly tried to sabotage the dialogue process.
Amid rising tensions, Wangchuk ended his fortnight-long fast. He appealed for non-violence and urged dialogue. He expressed sorrow over the turn of events, emphasising that the movement’s goal is peaceful advocacy for statehood and Sixth Schedule protections. Meanwhile, authorities continue to manage the aftermath, highlighting the need for calm and ongoing engagement with stakeholders in the region.
