Bottle gourd, or lauki, is often celebrated as a cooling, hydrating vegetable packed with nutrition. From curries to juices, it is a staple in many Indian households. But here is the twist: not everyone should be eating it. In fact, for certain groups of people, bottle gourds can do more harm than good. Let us dive into who needs to be extra careful.

Pregnant Women – A Hidden Risk

For expectant mothers, lauki may not always be the safest choice. Some studies suggest toxins in bottle gourd could interfere with foetal health. Doctors usually advise pregnant women to check with a healthcare professional before adding it to their diet, to avoid unnecessary risks.

Those with Low Blood Pressure

Bottle gourd is known for its ability to reduce blood pressure, which benefits those dealing with hypertension. However, if your blood pressure is already on the lower side, overconsumption can backfire. Dizziness, fatigue, and headaches may occur, making it best to consume lauki in moderation.

Bottle Gourd is not Kidney-Friendly

Lauki is rich in potassium, a nutrient generally considered healthy, but for people with weak or compromised kidneys, excessive potassium can overload the system. In such cases, lauki might worsen kidney-related complications instead of helping.

Sensitive Stomachs Beware

Those with digestion issues such as bloating, gas, or indigestion should be cautious. The fibre and water content in bottle gourd can sometimes slow digestion, worsening existing problems. Pairing it with light, easy-to-digest foods may reduce discomfort, but moderation remains key.

Danger of Bitter Lauki

This is where things get serious. Bitter-tasting bottle gourd contains toxic compounds, including cucurbitacin, which can trigger abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in extreme cases, food poisoning. Experts recommend tasting a small piece before cooking or juicing and discarding it immediately if it tastes bitter.

Bottle gourd may be full of health benefits, but it is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant women, kidney patients, people with low blood pressure, and those with digestive troubles should proceed with caution. And remember: if your lauki tastes bitter, it is better to discard it than take a chance.
