Sushila Karki Takes Oath as Nepal’s First Woman Prime Minister

Sushila Karki has taken the oath as Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister, following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli. President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath on 13 September 2025 in the presence of senior officials, security chiefs, and diplomats. Karki takes charge as Nepal slowly returns to normal after days of protests and unrest. The interim government will run the country until the general election, which is scheduled to be held in March 2026.

Who is Sushila Karki?

Sushila Karki, aged 73, is Nepal’s former Chief Justice and the first woman to hold that position. She is known for her stand against corruption and her independent approach. Karki began her legal career in 1979 and also took part in Nepal’s 1990 People’s Movement.
