The India–US trade relationship has again taken the spotlight, as United States President Donald Trump confirmed that Washington and New Delhi will resume tariff negotiations in the coming weeks. The announcement was made through Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, where he highlighted the importance of addressing “trade barriers” between the two nations.
Trump hopeful on talks
Trump said that the United States and India are set to continue discussions aimed at resolving trade barriers. He added that he looks forward to speaking with Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks and expressed confidence that both countries will reach a successful agreement.
This comes against the backdrop of the United States recently imposing a 50% tariff on several Indian goods, along with an additional 25% penalty on Indian purchases of Russian oil. Despite these developments, Trump reiterated that India–US ties remain a “very special relationship.” He also clarified that, although he may not agree with some of Prime Minister Modi’s current decisions, their personal friendship remains strong.
India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward… pic.twitter.com/3K9hlJxWcl

When asked if he was open to resetting ties with India, Trump responded that he would always remain friends with Prime Minister Modi, calling him a great leader. He added that India and the United States share a very special relationship and assured there was nothing to worry about.
In response, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Trump’s remarks on tariff negotiations. As talks gain momentum, observers believe the India–US trade relationship is moving into a new phase in which both Trump and Modi appear determined to find common ground, even amid global economic challenges.
