Cambodia Urges Immediate Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes With Thailand

Cambodia

Cambodia has called for an immediate ceasefire with Thailand after two days of fighting along the border. The conflict unfolded close to the Preah Vihear and Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple sites. Both sides used rockets and heavy weapons. A Cambodian soldier lost his life, while two Thai soldiers sustained serious injuries due to landmine explosions. Cambodia’s UN representative, Chhea Keo, stated that the country wants peace and has requested a truce without any conditions.

Border Dispute Sparks Clashes

Tensions rose after the recent landmine incident. The main issue is a long-standing border dispute over the Preah Vihear Temple. In 1962, the International Court of Justice declared that the Preah Vihear Temple lies within Cambodian territory. Thailand accepted the decision but still claims a nearby area. This disagreement has caused several clashes over the years, including deadly ones in 2008 and 2011. The issue remains unresolved and sensitive for both countries.
