The Supreme Court on Tuesday denied relief to Baljinder Singh, an army commando convicted in a dowry death case. Singh had sought exemption from surrender, citing his role in the ‘Operation Sindoor’ and 20 years of service in the Rashtriya Rifles. The court, however, held that the military service cannot be used as a shield for crime at home. Singh was held guilty of strangling his wife within two years of their marriage and was sentenced to section 304-B of the IPC.
‘Operation Sindoor’, Not An Excuse
A bench of Supreme Court justices, Ujjal Bhuyan and K. Vinod Chandra, rejected his plea, noting that his military-acquired physical strength only highlighted his ability to commit a crime, not justify it. The court issued notice in the case and replies from the respondents within six weeks.
