Mahatma Gandhi’s Great-Granddaughter Jailed for Rs 3 Crore Scam

Ashish Lata Ramgobin, the great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, has been sentenced to seven years in jail by a South African court. She was found guilty of fraud and forgery in a case involving over 6 million rand, or roughly Rs 3.2 crore. The incident dates back to 2015, when Ramgobin allegedly duped a businessman by falsely promising to help with the import of goods from India. She produced fake invoices and documents to back her claims.

56-year-old Ramgobin is the daughter of renowned activists Ela Gandhi and the late Mewa Ramgobin. Her conviction has shocked many, as she comes from a family long associated with honesty and the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The case has sparked debate, with some saying her actions tarnish Gandhi’s name, while others believe personal deeds should not reflect on family heritage. The verdict has been widely reported across Indian and international media.
