Pakistan Urges India to Resume River Flow Under Indus Water Treaty

Pakistan

Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources has reportedly urged India to reconsider its suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. The appeal follows India’s decision to halt the 1960 agreement. The agreement was suspended after the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians. India blames Pakistan-based groups for the attack and insists the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan ends its support for terrorism.

The Indus Waters Treaty, has been a cornerstone of India-Pakistan water sharing for over six decades. This is the first time India has paused the agreement since 1960, the move backed by the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first message to the country post Operation Sindoor, reaffirmed India’s tough stance, declaring that “water and blood cannot flow together.” Indian officials say the treaty, built on goodwill, has been repeatedly undermined by Pakistan’s actions. India now plans a three-tier water strategy and may fast-track stalled hydroelectric projects along the Indus River system. Watch PM Modi’s briefing on Operation Sindoor here.
